The Spanish Inquisition – Redux
Since at least 1991, our country has been strapped down in a torture chamber. The torture began subtly, like a drop of water from the ceiling landing on the head. Multi-culturism dripping slowly on the head of the American culture (founded by the American Revolution and the Protestant Work Ethic). "America is the melting pot and all cultures should be important and represented in America…" It’s no problem – everyone said – We’re big enough to let those little guys have their space. Little did we notice as, at the same time, the Founding Fathers were being humanized, reduced from essential paragons of enlightenment thinking and virtue into mere mortals. (Thomas Jefferson slept with his slaves? Gasp!)
It was the undercutting at the most elementary levels of education which did not happen before and cause the most palpable hurt. For the first time in our country, the basis for our future as a country was being manipulated into something gruesome, despondent, churlish, selfish, and small-minded. But those are just children - everyone pointed out – They’ll grow out of it. Our leaders are still strong. Our country is still strong. Then, we, being a caring people, were told that certain words and ideas were not to be spoken, out of kindness to those who would be offended.
Those who broke the rule suffered greatly at the hands of our great protectors, the American Press.
The media outlets gleefully joined in the new crusade to stamp out crudeness and offensive words, ideas, and thoughts; it was politically correct too.
Our entertainment has developed into opportunities to uplift the low, the outcast – single mothers, black people, American Indians, gays, and women – not merely by writing stories which would show them overcoming their problems in life, but by also callously caricaturing the people who appear to have it all – the white American males. How often do we see, in the most "innocent" of entertainments, the foolish, greedy white man, the wise but poor brown man, and the sobering and intellectual woman?
If you cannot be troubled to uplift some, you can always more easily devalue others. Thus the Christian faith becomes the next target. (The Roman Catholic Church is similarly a large, ossified target. The wail of the tortured victim is beginning to echo.)
As I’ve mentioned previously, the Protestant Work Ethic helped to create a prosperous nation out of the rough land that was America. Every Thanksgiving, we celebrate the strong Protestant Work Ethic which provided a bounty for the Jamestown Settlement with the help of their new Indian friends.
Eliminate the connection to Christianity and you can eliminate the very soul of the hardworking American. It’s a harder thing to do. Strong hot probes must be used and delved deep.
